Road Protection & Maintenance Engineering During El Niño Rains
Private estate roads, agricultural feeder roads, and commercial access streets across Kenya suffer severe destruction during El Niño rainfall. Standing water saturates subgrades, while high-velocity surface runoff strips gravel and creates deep potholes.
1. Road Camber & Cross-Slope Specifications
Water must never stand on a road surface. Proper road geometry forces water into side ditches instantly:
- Tarmac Asphalt Roads: Maintain a 2.5% to 3.0% center crown cross-slope.
- Gravel / Murram Roads: Maintain a steeper 4.0% center crown cross-slope using a motor grader to prevent water pooling in wheel ruts.
2. Emergency Asphalt Patching & Subgrade Repairs
When water penetrates a tarmac crack, traffic pressure causes hydraulic pumping that creates potholes within 48 hours. Maintenance crews must cut out damaged areas into square blocks, excavate saturated base material, compact fresh stone base, and lay hot-mix or cold-mix asphalt sealed with K1-60 bitumen emulsion.
