Hillside Soil Stabilization & Landslide Prevention in Kenya
Developing sloping plots in Limuru, Ruiru, Runda, Westlands, and Kajiado exposes buildings to landslides and severe foundation scour during El Niño rainfall. Water saturation increases soil weight while reducing shear strength, leading to sudden slope failures.
1. Slope Angle Risk Classification
- Gentle Slopes (0° to 10°): Require grass turfing, V-drainage channels, and minor stone masonry terracing.
- Moderate Slopes (10° to 25°): Require structural gabion wire baskets (2.0m x 1.0m x 1.0m) packed with 100mm–250mm hard quarry stones. Gabions allow water to pass through freely while retaining soil.
- Steep Slopes (25°+): Require engineered Class 30/20 reinforced concrete retaining walls designed by a registered Professional Engineer (EBK).
2. Retaining Wall Drainage & Hydrostatic Pressure Relief
90% of retaining wall failures during El Niño occur because trapped water behind the wall builds up massive hydrostatic pressure. Every retaining wall built by Dagamu Contractors includes:
- 50mm PVC Weep-Holes: Spaced at 1.5-meter staggered intervals along the base of the wall.
- 300mm Porous Backfill Drain Layer: A 300mm thick column of clean 20mm/40mm aggregate aggregate placed directly behind the wall, wrapped in geotextile filter fabric to prevent silt clogging.
